I bought a THC vape cartridge through an expat group chat and now the police have searched my apartment — I'm an E-2. What did the chat expose me to?

I'm American, E-2, first year. A few months ago, in a large foreigners' group chat, someone offered "carts" and I bought one THC vape cartridge for 150,000 won, met him near a subway station, and used it over a few weeks. Two days ago police came to my apartment with a warrant, found the empty cartridge, took my phone, and questioned me for hours. They showed me screenshots of the group chat — my message asking for one, his reply, the meeting arrangement. It seems the seller was arrested and the whole chat is in their hands.
I'm one of what must be dozens of buyers in that chat. I didn't know a vape was treated like the plant. I've heard nothing about my school being contacted yet.
What I need to know: (1) Is a THC cartridge legally the same as cannabis in Korea? (2) Being in a group chat where drugs were sold — is that itself a problem, or only my purchase? (3) How do cases with dozens of buyers from one seller get handled, and where do I stand as a one-time buyer?

A Answer

A THC cartridge is cannabis under Korean law — the statute covers the plant, its resin, and any product made from either, and a cartridge of cannabis oil is squarely inside it. Being a member of the chat is not an offense; your purchase and your use are, and the chat is the evidence of both. Cases with dozens of buyers from one seller are processed as a batch, sorted by quantity, frequency and cooperation, and a one-time buyer of a single cartridge who cooperates is at the bottom of that sort. Your school has not been contacted because there is nothing to contact them about; keep it that way by handling the next four weeks correctly.
What this is under Korean law
The Narcotics Control Act (마약류관리법, mayangnyu gwalli-beop) defines cannabis (대마, daema) to include the plant, its resin, and products manufactured from them, with a narrow exclusion for seeds, roots and stalks. Cannabis oil and concentrates are "products manufactured from" cannabis, and THC cartridges have been charged and convicted as cannabis, not as a separate psychotropic. Purchase, possession and use each fall under Article 61 — up to five years' imprisonment or a fine of up to KRW 50 million. The empty cartridge is possession; the weeks of use are use; the transaction is purchase.
The seller is in a different position: sale is an act for the purpose of trade under Article 59, with a minimum of one year. That is the case the police built, and the buyers are its by-product.
The chat
Membership in a group chat where drugs were discussed or sold is not an offense in itself; Korean law does not criminalize presence in a forum. What the chat provides against you is a dated, first-person record of the offer, your request, the price and the meeting, which is stronger than most drug cases have. It also provides context the police will use: whether you asked more than once, whether you referred anyone, whether you commented on other offers. Read your own messages before the police read them to you again; the account you give must match them.
How batch cases are handled
When a seller's phone yields dozens of buyers, the police work through them in order of significance — repeat buyers, large quantities, anyone who resold or introduced others — and process one-time buyers of a single item in a batch, often with the same disposition. For first-time buyers who admit, test, and cooperate, prosecutors have used conditional suspensions of indictment (기소유예, giso yuye) with education conditions and summary fines; indictment is reserved for buyers whose messages show more than one purchase or any role beyond customer. Your position is decided by two facts the chat already contains and one it does not: how many times you bought, whether you brought anyone in, and whether you cooperated afterward.
Your situation as a foreign national
A departure suspension (출국정지, chulguk jeongji) is possible; confirm before travel. You are entitled to an interpreter and counsel; the phone's forensic examination should be limited to the offense, and you may be present.
Your E-2 continues during the investigation. A conviction is a fact the Immigration Office weighs at renewal, and drug offenses are within the deportation-review grounds; a suspension of indictment is not a conviction. The police do not notify employers; an E-2 sponsor becomes involved only if immigration acts. Those outcomes are the Immigration Office's; we do not predict them. MEGA X handles the criminal case; where it affects your status, we coordinate with an immigration specialist as part of your defense.
What to do now, and what not to do
Leave the chat now and screenshot nothing further; do not message anyone in it. Do not attempt to access your cloud accounts to alter anything. Enroll in an education program. Have counsel file a written submission before referral and confirm the scope of the phone examination. Prepare your account with your lawyer: one purchase, one cartridge, use over weeks, stopped.
From a former police investigator's perspective
Group-chat seller cases produce long buyer lists, and investigators want the list processed, not litigated. A buyer who admits the single purchase the chat shows, tests, and enrolls in a program is a name the investigator can refer with a recommendation for a conditional suspension and move past. A buyer who claims the cartridge was "nicotine" against a chat that says "THC" has volunteered for the top of the list. The chat is not your enemy if your statement agrees with it.
