As independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo and former Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kim Kyung were referred to prosecutors while in custody, the police-stage investigation into the so-called “KRW 100 million nomination donation” allegation, which had stirred public attention, has effectively concluded for now.

However, the case is not yet fully over. Police are continuing an additional investigation into separate allegations of “split donations.” Kim claims that after she delivered a shopping bag containing KRW 100 million to Kang and later received it back, she again transferred political funds in a split-donation format at Kang’s request. If police determine that Kim’s claim is true, the two are expected to be additionally referred to prosecutors on separate criminal facts.

Attorney Chon Hyeong Hwan of Mega-X Law Office also said, “They will be referred to prosecutors on separate criminal facts, but because the parties involved are the same, there is a high possibility that the case will be assigned to the same prosecutor’s office.”

He added, “If that happens, the trial will likely proceed before the same court and the same panel of judges.”
