HANOI, Vietnam, Financial News — Amid the recent surge in murders, kidnappings, and confinement cases targeting Koreans in Southeast Asia, including the situation in Cambodia, calls are growing for the establishment of a “Korean Desk,” a police unit dedicated to crimes involving Korean nationals, as the only viable solution.
The Korean government previously discussed the establishment of a Korean Desk with Cambodian authorities, but no agreement was reached. Local observers continue to point out that police attachés stationed in the region are far too few in number and lack investigative authority, making fundamental crackdowns difficult.

Chon Hyeong Hwan, Managing Partner at Mega-X Law Office and a former police officer, said, “Online scam crimes are becoming increasingly sophisticated and advanced.” He pointed out, “Campaigns and preventive education have limitations, and active crackdowns are the fundamental solution.”

Meanwhile, as the establishment of a Korean Desk in Cambodia has fallen through, dissatisfaction among Korean residents is growing. One Korean resident in Cambodia said, “If crackdowns continue to be merely symbolic and ineffective as they are now, the number of participants will continue to increase, and the situation will ultimately become prolonged.”
