Following the extortion case involving popular mukbang YouTuber Tzuyang, whose real name is Park Jung-won and who has 10 million subscribers, calls are growing for measures to stop the illegal conduct of so-called “cyber wrecker” YouTubers, a term referring to YouTubers who fuel controversy through sensational videos.

Attorney Chon Hyeong Hwan of YK Law Firm also said, “Unlike terrestrial broadcasters, which are subject to strict regulations such as the Broadcasting Act, YouTubers are not subject to any such restrictions.”

He added, “As terrestrial broadcasting is now drawing lower ratings and the public is increasingly turning to YouTubers, it seems that YouTube may also need to be subject to regulations comparable to those applied to terrestrial broadcasters.”
