By Lee Yoo-rim and Baek Joo-ah, Edaily — Prosecutors have launched an investigation into so-called “cyber wreckers” who are suspected of threatening Tzuyang, a mukbang YouTuber with 10 million subscribers whose real name is Park Jung-won, in an attempt to extort money from her.

There are growing calls for strong punishment of cyber wreckers who create malicious videos for profit, by treating such conduct as profit-driven crime.

Attorney Chon Hyeong Hwan of YK Law Firm said, “In cases of simple defamation, even if the victim proceeds with an investigation in Korea, it is not easy to obtain cooperation from Google, a foreign company, in providing identifying information.”

He added, “If the subject cannot be identified, the process may be delayed indefinitely from the very first stage, with measures such as suspension of indictment or suspension of investigation.”
