The controversy surrounding singer Kim Ho-joong, who allegedly crashed into a taxi and fled after driving under the influence in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 9th, continues to grow.

Kim reportedly used various methods in an attempt to avoid drunk driving charges. However, once the police investigation began in earnest, he was arrested on the 24th. Attorney Chon Hyeong Hwan of YK Law Firm told this newspaper by phone, “Kim used various methods to avoid detention, but he was ultimately arrested. This shows that investigative authorities do not intend to handle drunk driving accidents lightly.”

He added, “Kim appears to have believed that he could avoid the charges if his blood alcohol concentration was low. However, evidence suggesting that Kim had been drinking continues to emerge, including testimony from people who were with him at the drinking gathering, statements from employees at the establishment, and CCTV footage.”

Attorney Chon further advised, “There are also calls to strengthen legislation in order to prevent tactics like those used by Kim. However, since there may also be criticism that such measures could infringe upon fundamental rights, it remains uncertain whether stronger legislation will actually be enacted.”

He added, “Investigative authorities need to conduct more detailed investigations and widely convey the message across society that even if someone uses tricks like Kim did, they ultimately cannot avoid punishment.”
