Three months have passed since police launched an investigation in February into actor Yoo Ah-in, 37, whose real name is Uhm Hong-sik, on allegations of habitual drug use. Police are expected to conduct a second round of questioning soon. In Yoo’s case, many believe the investigation will take longer than typical drug cases because the types of narcotics he allegedly used are more numerous, with separate distribution and supply channels for each.

Those inside and outside the police view Yoo’s case as unusual. This is because the types of narcotics allegedly used by Yoo are noticeably more numerous than in other drug cases. Even when drug offenders use multiple types of narcotics, the number reportedly does not usually exceed three.
Attorney Chon Hyeong Hwan of YK Law Firm, a former police officer, said, “It is rare for four types of narcotic substances to be detected, but in Yoo’s case, five were found.”
Attorney Chon explained, “Because he allegedly used various types of narcotics, the police must investigate the possibility of additional drug use, as well as the distribution process for each drug, the suppliers, and any accomplices.” He added, “Since drug distribution channels are highly secretive, it will likely take time to uncover them for each type of drug.”

Yoo is accused of violating the Narcotics Control Act by allegedly receiving more than 100 injections of propofol over approximately two years, from 2021 to 2022, at hospitals in Seoul’s Gangnam-gu and Yongsan-gu districts. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s drug investigation unit questioned him on the 27th of last month. Police plan to conduct a second round of questioning once they complete investigations into additional allegations and possible accomplices.
