Police Say Driver in “City Hall Station Wrong-Way Accident” Sped While Exiting Underground Parking Lot… Greater Weight Placed on Driver Negligence

Amid a number of questions surrounding the wrong-way driving accident near Seoul’s City Hall Station that left 16 people dead or injured, police are placing greater weight on driver negligence, as they believe the driver, surnamed Cha, pressed the accelerator pedal.

(Omitted)

Regarding the expected sentence, Attorney Chon Hyeong Hwan of YK Law Firm said, “I expect the sentence to be five years or less. Although nine people died, there is a limitation in that this is a negligence offense.”

He added, “If settlements are reached smoothly, a sentence of around three to four years may be expected. If sudden unintended acceleration is recognized, punishment is expected to be difficult.”
